Loro Ciuffenna’s summer String Quartet Festival is held in July and August in the Pieve di S. Pietro a Gropina , a national monument of the 8th-12th century nestled in the classic Tuscan landscape.

The Festival is one of very few concert series in Italy dedicated exclusively to string quartets. The Romanesque church where the concerts are held is a place of exceptional historical and artistic interest and beauty, with excellent acoustics that make playing and hearing superb chamber music especially rewarding.

The Festival, in its twenty-one seasons (the first was in 1994), is distinguished by the high quality of the Italian and foreign quartets appearing, and for the large public, both local and foreign, who fill the pieve at every concert.

Performances are of the highest order, by celebrated Italian and international quartets such as the Quartets of Venice, Turin, Rome, the Bridge Quartet (UK), the Ariel Quartet (Israel), Antarés (FrancE) and by younger prize-winning quartets.

The initiative was first proposed by the music historian Harvey Sachs, who, in 1994, recognized the pieve’s suitability – particularly for stringed instruments – while being aware of the challenge that the quartet genre, the most demanding of all chamber music, would present to a public as yet to be “won”. From 1997 the Festival has been directed by the harpsichordist Barbara Sachs, and then a teacher at the School of Music of Fiesole, founded by Piero Farulli. Maestro Farulli (1920-2012), famous violist of the historic Quartetto Italiano, encouraged the most important national quartets to collaborate in realizing the new Festival, forging a permanent connection between it and the Accademia Musicale Chigiana, of Siena.

Thanks to the prestigious Chigiana, home of internationally recognized Master Classes, the Festival opens with a concert by quartets attending the chamber music course and chosen by Günter Pichler, founder of the Alban Berg Quartet. In the past, they have come from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, the Czech Republic, China, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Holland, Italy, Japan, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, and the USA.

Over the years, the number of passionate and loyal listeners has reached 1000 per season, and a group of volunteers from the Pro Loco, an association for promoting culture and tourism for the Municipality of Loro Ciuffenna, provides logistical support.

THE CONCERTS ARE FREE: music needs safe-guarding and preservation, for us and for future generations. The musical arts, among the profoundest of human expressions, would disappear if, in the future, there were no musicians with the passion for playing, and listeners lucky to have discovered how to be carried away by listening.

Our goal is to succeed in realizing the 22° Festival with 4 concerts of the highest level.

At present we can only guarantee 2 concerts, and this crowdfunding campaign will permit us to offer a full season.

Thanks to your contribution, you will realize the Festival along with us!
